Wood + clamps: Wood Finish Prep

Wood finish prep with silver grain fill

Finish Preparation

Wood finish prep, using old school techniques with some modern twists. We stain our instruments with time-tested dyes and use premium clear grain fillers in our projects.

For a truly distinctive finish, we have a variety of pigments we can add to the filler. This results in the grain taking on the effect of that pigment, anything from super black to metallic to reflective pearl wood grains. This a unique technique that creates unique effects, something you won’t find anywhere else.

Fretwork & Inlays

Fretwork & inlays have been completed. This guitar features natural Mother of Pearl inlays for the fret markers, along both the fretboard and the side of the neck. Our natural Mother of Pearl inlays have a beautiful sparkle in the light.

This particular rosewood fretboard is an exquisite example featuring deep purple hues and gorgeous grain structure. These natural colors tie in well with the Purple Heart wood used throughout the instrument.

The frets are all carefully installed, rounded, and polished by hand until smooth, shiny and comfortable. This is a time intensive step, but well worth the extra effort.

Fretwork & inlays are a critical step in quality instruments. This is a point where the player physically connects with the instrument and time must be taken here for outstanding results.

Hand Carved Guitar Necks

Hand carved guitar necks, done the old fashioned way. All of our instrument necks are carved by hand using various rasps and other hand tools. While the big name guitar companies are making their instruments on robot CNC machines, we choose to do things using traditional, time honored methods. This enables us to create a unique instrument to your exact specifications. You pick the custom “vintage C” or “modern D” profile. Want your classic “T” style guitar to feel like a “LP” during solos? No problem, you decide the fretboard radius too. Anything is possible with our traditional hand carved guitar necks.

The Woods

Each wood used in Cascade Mountain Woodworking’s Classic Cutting Boards has its unique qualities that contribute to the overall beauty and durability of the product.

Hard Rock Maple

Hard Rock Maple is a dense, hard wood that is known for its durability and resistance to scratches and dents. It is an ideal choice for cutting boards because it is non-porous and won’t absorb liquids, making it easy to clean and maintain.

Sapele

Sapele is a hardwood that is often used as a substitute for Mahogany because of its similar color and grain patterns. It has a reddish-brown color and a distinctive, interlocking grain pattern that adds visual interest to the cutting boards.

Jatoba

Jatoba, also known as Brazilian Cherry, is a dense hardwood that has a rich, reddish-brown color and a distinctive, swirling grain pattern. It is known for its durability and resistance to scratches and dents.

Padauk

Padauk is a hardwood that has a bright, reddish-orange color that darkens over time with exposure to light. It has a straight, interlocking grain pattern that adds visual interest to the cutting boards.

Craftsmanship

Cascade Mountain Woodworking is a family-run business that takes pride in their craftsmanship. Each cutting board is carefully handcrafted, sanded, and finished to ensure that it meets their high standards for quality. They use only the finest materials and pay attention to every detail to ensure that each cutting board is a work of art.

Benefits of Edge Grain Cutting Boards

Cascade Mountain Woodworking’s Classic Cutting Boards are made using the edge grain construction method, which has several benefits over other methods.

  • Durability: Edge grain cutting boards are more durable than other types of cutting boards because the wood fibers are oriented vertically, making them less likely to warp or crack over time. The edge grain construction of these cutting boards makes them extremely durable and able to withstand the rigors of daily use.
  • Knife-friendly surface: The wood fibers in an edge grain cutting board run perpendicular to the surface, which means that knives stay sharper for longer and are less likely to become dull over time.
  • Low maintenance: Edge grain cutting boards are easy to clean and maintain. They require only occasional oiling to keep them looking and functioning their best.
  • Versatility: Edge grain cutting boards are suitable for a wide range of cutting tasks, from chopping vegetables to slicing meat.
